If you have run an Airbnb or Vrbo for more than a few months, you have seen this. A guest checks out on Sunday, the next one checks in on Tuesday, and Monday night just sits there. Nobody books it because it is too short for most travelers and too close to the next stay. Those are orphan nights, and they quietly cut into what your home earns over a year.
I host short term rentals here in San Antonio, and orphan nights are one of the first things I look for on an owner's calendar. Most of them can be filled, or at least put to good use, with a few setting changes and some local know how. Here is how I think about it.
What counts as an orphan night
An orphan night is a short gap, usually one or two nights, stuck between two bookings. Sometimes the gap is shorter than your minimum stay, so Airbnb or Vrbo will not even let a guest book it. Other times it is bookable but falls on nights travelers rarely want on their own, like a lone Sunday or Monday.
A couple of empty nights a month may not sound like much. Add them up over a full year, though, and they can make a real difference in what your property brings in.
Why orphan nights happen
Most gaps come from a few common causes:
- Minimum stay rules. A two or three night minimum protects you from constant turnovers, but it also keeps short gaps from ever being booked.
- Check-in day rules. If you only allow arrivals on certain days of the week, gaps tend to form around them.
- Preparation time. Blocking a night before or after every stay for cleaning can leave a single open night that no one can use.
- Booking patterns. Weekends get booked first, and the weeknights around them get left behind.
Six ways to fill orphan nights
Lower the minimum stay for gap dates only. You do not have to drop your minimum stay across the whole calendar. You can set a different minimum stay for specific dates in your calendar settings, so you can keep a two night minimum on most nights and allow a one night stay inside a gap.
Use a small, targeted price drop. A modest discount on just the gap night usually works better than a sale on the whole month. Many dynamic pricing tools have a setting for orphan or gap nights that handles this for you. Keep the cut reasonable. A deep discount can bring in guests who are hard on a home, and that costs you more than the empty night would have.
Offer more time to the guests you already have. Sometimes the best guest for an orphan night is one already booked. Message the guest checking out before the gap and offer an extra night or a late checkout. Do the same for the guest arriving after it and offer an early check-in or an extra night up front. Make the change through the platform so the booking stays covered by its policies. You already know how these guests treat your home, which is a nice bonus.
Lean on San Antonio's weeknight travelers. Most orphan nights land on weeknights, and this city has more weeknight travel than people expect:
- Families in town for Air Force Basic Military Training graduation at JBSA Lackland, which happens throughout the year
- Patients and families visiting the South Texas Medical Center
- Conference and convention visitors heading downtown to the Henry B. González Convention Center
- Traveling nurses and military members between housing who need a night or two before a longer stay
If your home is close to Lackland, the Medical Center, or downtown, say so in your listing description so these travelers find you. Some of them end up needing longer stays, too. My post on mid term rentals for military and medical travelers covers that side of things.
Rethink your preparation time. If you block a full day before or after each stay for cleaning, ask whether you really need it. With a reliable cleaner who can turn the home over on the same day, you may be able to remove that buffer and open up nights that are blocked today.
Check your calendar every week. New orphan nights show up every time a booking lands. A quick weekly look at the next couple of months lets you catch them while there is still time to adjust the price or the minimum stay. Waiting until the night before rarely works.
When an empty night is the right call
Not every gap needs to be filled. Leaving a night open can be the smarter choice when:
- The cleaning and turnover cost for a one night guest would be more than that guest pays
- The home needs a deep clean, a repair, or new photos
- Back to back one night stays are wearing on the home or bothering your neighbors
I would rather see a home earn well with a few planned gaps than run nonstop and wear out early.
How I handle orphan nights for owners
When I co-host a home, watching the calendar for gaps is part of the regular routine, along with pricing, guest messages, and turnovers. I look at each gap and decide whether to adjust the minimum stay, the price, or simply leave it for maintenance. You can see what each option includes on my services and packages page.
FAQ
What is an orphan night on Airbnb?
It is a short gap, usually one or two nights, between two bookings. It is hard to fill because it is shorter than most guests want or shorter than your minimum stay.
Should I discount orphan nights?
A small discount on just the gap nights often helps. Keep it modest and pair it with a lower minimum stay for those dates.
Can I fill orphan nights without allowing one night stays all the time?
Yes. Change the minimum stay only for the gap dates and keep your normal rules everywhere else.
